What £9,000 looks like with and without VAT
Invoicing a client for a round £9,000 is common for project work, retainers and monthly fees. On a standard-rated invoice you add £1,800.00 of VAT, so the client pays £10,800.00 and you later pass the £1,800.00 to HMRC, less any input VAT you have paid on your own costs in the same quarter.
When £9,000 is the gross figure, say a fixed price agreed with a customer who does not care how it is split, the net is £7,500.00 and the VAT is £1,500.00. That is the number your accounts software should show in the VAT column. If the work was reduced rated, for example certain energy saving installations, the VAT inside £9,000 would be £428.57 and the net £8,571.43.
If you are on the Flat Rate Scheme the maths changes: you still charge your customer £10,800.00, but you pay HMRC a fixed percentage of that gross figure rather than £1,800.00 less input VAT. For a £9,000 job that can mean keeping a little of the VAT, or paying more if your sector rate is high or you count as a limited cost business. The flat rate tab on the main calculator runs both numbers side by side.
