How do car valeters usually invoice?

Mobile valeters charge fixed prices by vehicle size and valet level, paid on the day by card, with detailing packages such as polishing and ceramic coating quoted per vehicle after inspection. Dealership and fleet contracts are invoiced weekly or monthly per vehicle at a set rate with the registration numbers listed. Travel is included within a local radius and charged beyond it.

Car valeters in this example are paid on receipt. Hourly rates run from £20 to £40.

What should a car valeter put on an invoice?

Beyond the legal basics, car valeters should:

  • State the valet level and vehicle size so the price matches your published list.
  • For dealership work, list each vehicle's registration and the valet type.
  • Quote detailing work separately with the coating product and its guarantee.
  • Take payment on completion for private customers and give the invoice as the receipt.

Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:

  • a unique, sequential invoice number
  • your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
  • the client’s name and address
  • the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
  • a clear description of each item of work or goods
  • the amount due and when it must be paid
  • your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered

Do car valeters charge VAT?

Valeting is standard rated at 20% once you are VAT registered, which is compulsory above £90,000 turnover. A sole trader mobile valeter is usually below it and charges no VAT. Dealership contract work with several staff is more likely to be registered.

On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for car valeters is usually “Any other activity not listed elsewhere” at 12% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions

How much do car valeters charge?
A full valet is £80 to £150 in 2026 depending on size, a mini valet £35 to £60, and detailing with machine polish and ceramic coating £250 to £600 upwards. Dealership contract rates are £20 to £35 per vehicle for forecourt valets. Mobile work includes travel within a local area.
Do car valeters charge VAT?
Only if VAT registered, above £90,000 turnover. Most mobile valeters are below the threshold. Valeting businesses with a unit and staff serving dealerships are usually registered and charge 20%.
Should valeters invoice dealerships weekly or monthly?
Weekly for high-volume forecourt work so cash flow keeps pace with the hours, monthly for smaller accounts. List every vehicle by registration so the dealership can match the invoice to its stock records. Terms are usually 14 to 30 days.
