Electrician invoice template

A worked example for electricians in the construction and building trades category, with 2026 prices and the VAT rules that apply.

A electrician invoice should show a unique invoice number, your name and address, the client's details, the date, each item of work with its price, and the total due. Electricians typically allow 14 days to pay and take a 30% deposit. VAT at 20% is added only if you are VAT registered.

How do electricians usually invoice?

Electricians quote fixed prices for defined jobs such as a consumer unit change or a rewire, then invoice on completion with the certificate number quoted. Materials are itemised because customers want to see the brand of consumer unit or the number of sockets they paid for. Rewires and first-fix work on new builds are invoiced in stages, typically first fix, second fix and test.

Electricians in this example give the customer 14 days to pay, after a 30% deposit taken before the work starts. Hourly rates run from £45 to £85. A full day is typically £300 to £480.

What should a electrician put on an invoice?

Beyond the legal basics, electricians should:

  • Quote the EIC or Minor Works certificate number on the invoice; it proves the work was notified under Part P.
  • Separate materials from labour so a CIS contractor only deducts tax from the labour figure.
  • Add a line for any extras agreed on site, referenced to the date they were agreed.
  • State that the price assumes existing wiring is sound unless you tested it beforehand.

Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:

  • a unique, sequential invoice number
  • your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
  • the client’s name and address
  • the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
  • a clear description of each item of work or goods
  • the amount due and when it must be paid
  • your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered

Do electricians charge VAT?

Construction work for a contractor falls under CIS: the contractor deducts 20% (30% if you are not CIS registered) from the labour element before paying you, so show labour and materials on separate lines. If you are VAT registered and the contractor is too, the domestic reverse charge applies and you charge no VAT; write "Reverse charge: customer to account for VAT" on the invoice. Work for private householders is outside both rules. Below the £90,000 registration threshold you charge no VAT at all.

On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for electricians is usually “General building or construction services” at 9.5% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions

Do electricians charge VAT on a new-build house?
Electrical work on a genuinely new dwelling is zero rated, so a VAT-registered electrician charges 0% on both labour and materials incorporated in the building. Work on an existing home is standard rated at 20%. Get the zero rating in writing from the main contractor and keep it with the invoice.
Should an electrician invoice a rewire in stages?
Yes. A typical pattern is 30% deposit on booking, 40% after first fix and the balance after second fix and testing. Each stage gets its own invoice with the same job reference so the customer can see what has been paid and what remains.
Can I charge for the electrical certificate separately?
You can show it as a line, usually £40 to £80, covering the test time and the notification fee to your competent person scheme. Many electricians fold it into the labour price instead. Either way the certificate reference should appear on the invoice.
