What £6,000 looks like with and without VAT
Invoicing a client for a round £6,000 is common for project work, retainers and monthly fees. On a standard-rated invoice you add £1,200.00 of VAT, so the client pays £7,200.00 and you later pass the £1,200.00 to HMRC, less any input VAT you have paid on your own costs in the same quarter.
When £6,000 is the gross figure, say a fixed price agreed with a customer who does not care how it is split, the net is £5,000.00 and the VAT is £1,000.00. That is the number your accounts software should show in the VAT column. If the work was reduced rated, for example certain energy saving installations, the VAT inside £6,000 would be £285.71 and the net £5,714.29.
If you are on the Flat Rate Scheme the maths changes: you still charge your customer £7,200.00, but you pay HMRC a fixed percentage of that gross figure rather than £1,200.00 less input VAT. For a £6,000 job that can mean keeping a little of the VAT, or paying more if your sector rate is high or you count as a limited cost business. The flat rate tab on the main calculator runs both numbers side by side.
