How do dance teachers usually invoice?

Dance teachers invoice parents termly in advance for weekly classes at a per-class price, with exam fees and costumes recharged at cost and private lessons for exam preparation as separate lines. Teachers working for a dance school are paid per class and invoice the school monthly with the classes listed. Show tickets and costumes are standard rated items even where the tuition itself is exempt.

Dance teachers in this example give the customer 7 days to pay. Hourly rates run from £25 to £55.

What should a dance teacher put on an invoice?

Beyond the legal basics, dance teachers should:

  • Invoice termly with the class, grade, number of classes and term dates.
  • Keep exam fees and costumes as recharged lines at cost, with costumes carrying VAT if you are registered.
  • For school work, list each class taught with the date and duration on a monthly invoice.
  • State the notice period for leaving a class, usually half a term, on the invoice.

Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:

  • a unique, sequential invoice number
  • your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
  • the client’s name and address
  • the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
  • a clear description of each item of work or goods
  • the amount due and when it must be paid
  • your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered

Do dance teachers charge VAT?

Dance tuition can be exempt from VAT as private tuition when a self-employed teacher personally teaches a form of dance ordinarily taught in schools, and tribunals have accepted ballet and other structured dance in this way. Classes taught by staff you employ, and dance schools run through a company, are standard rated once turnover passes £90,000. Fitness-style dance classes with no teaching structure are harder to justify as exempt, so keep syllabus and lesson plans.

On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for dance teachers is usually “Any other activity not listed elsewhere” at 12% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions

Are dance classes VAT exempt?
They can be, when a self-employed teacher personally teaches a form of dance that is ordinarily taught in schools, such as ballet or modern with a recognised syllabus. Classes taught by employed teachers or through a company are standard rated above the £90,000 threshold. Keep lesson plans and syllabus records to support the exemption.
How much do dance classes cost?
Children's classes are £7 to £12 per class in 2026, invoiced termly, with private lessons at £30 to £55 for 45 minutes. Dance schools pay freelance teachers £25 to £45 an hour. Exam fees and costumes are extra.
Should a dance teacher invoice termly?
Yes, termly in advance with the number of classes and the dates, which secures the place and keeps collection simple. State that missed classes are not refunded. Offer two instalments for families with several children.
