How do life coaches usually invoice?

Life coaches sell packages of sessions paid in advance by card, with the invoice listing the number of sessions, their length and the period in which they must be used, so there is a record if a client stops attending. Single sessions are paid at booking. Corporate coaching through an employer is invoiced monthly in arrears on 30 day terms with session dates but no notes on content.

Life coaches in this example are paid on receipt. Hourly rates run from £60 to £150.

What should a life coach put on an invoice?

Beyond the legal basics, life coaches should:

  • List the number and length of sessions in the package and the expiry date for using them.
  • Take payment at booking for single sessions and before the first session for packages.
  • State your cancellation policy (for example 24 hours) and charge missed sessions under it.
  • For employer-funded coaching, invoice the employer with dates only, keeping content confidential.

Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:

  • a unique, sequential invoice number
  • your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
  • the client’s name and address
  • the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
  • a clear description of each item of work or goods
  • the amount due and when it must be paid
  • your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered

Do life coaches charge VAT?

You only charge VAT once registered, which is compulsory when taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12 months. Below that, show no VAT line and no VAT number. Once registered, these services are standard rated at 20% for UK clients; services to business clients outside the UK are generally outside the scope of UK VAT.

On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for life coaches is usually “Any other activity not listed elsewhere” at 12% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions

How much do life coaches charge per session?
In 2026 private clients pay £60 to £150 per hour-long session, with packages of six sessions discounted by 10% to 15%. Corporate and executive coaching runs £150 to £400 a session. Group programmes are priced per place.
Should a coach sell packages or single sessions?
Packages paid in advance give commitment and cash flow, and they are the norm. Put an expiry period on them, typically three to six months, and state it on the invoice. Keep single sessions available at a higher per-session price.
Do life coaches charge VAT?
Only once registered, above £90,000 turnover, which few solo coaches reach. Coaching is standard rated at 20% once registered; it is not education or health care for VAT purposes, so no exemption applies. The flat rate sector is any other activity at 12%.
