How do models usually invoice?
Models invoice a day or hourly rate plus a usage fee for how and where the images will appear, with agency-represented models invoicing through the agency, which adds its commission and pays the model after deducting it. Direct bookings are invoiced by the model on 30 day terms with the shoot date and client named. Fittings, castings with a fee and travel beyond the booking city are listed separately.
Models in this example give the customer 30 days to pay. Hourly rates run from £50 to £200. A full day is typically £300 to £1,500.
What should a model put on an invoice?
Beyond the legal basics, models should:
- Separate the day rate from the usage fee and define the usage: media, territory, period.
- Name the shoot date, client and brand on the invoice.
- Charge fittings and paid castings as separate lines at the agreed hourly rate.
- If booked through an agency, invoice the agency, not the client, and note the agency job number.
Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:
- a unique, sequential invoice number
- your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
- the client’s name and address
- the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
- a clear description of each item of work or goods
- the amount due and when it must be paid
- your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered
Do models charge VAT?
You only charge VAT once registered, which is compulsory when taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12 months. Below that, show no VAT line and no VAT number. Once registered, this work is standard rated at 20%, including work for clients outside the UK in some cases, so check the place of supply rules for overseas clients.
On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for models is usually “Any other activity not listed elsewhere” at 12% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions
- How do models get paid?
- Agency models are paid by the agency after it collects from the client and deducts commission of 20% or more, often 60 to 90 days after the shoot. Freelance models invoice the client directly on 30 day terms. In both cases the fee is a day rate plus usage.
- What is a usage fee for a model?
- It is the fee for the client's right to use your image: an e-commerce site for a year costs less than a national billboard campaign. State the usage on the invoice so extensions can be invoiced later. Test shoots and portfolio work often carry no usage fee.
- Do models charge VAT?
- Only once registered, above £90,000 turnover. A registered model charges 20% on fees and usage to UK clients. If your agency invoices clients on your behalf, check whether its statements show VAT on your fee.
