How do sound engineers usually invoice?

Live sound engineers invoice by the day with the engineer fee and any PA hire as separate lines, to production companies and venues on 30 day terms and to bands and private clients before the event. Studio engineers charge per track or per day for recording and mixing, with the balance due before final mixes are released. Travel, accommodation and overtime beyond a 10 or 12 hour day are listed separately.

Sound engineers in this example give the customer 30 days to pay. Hourly rates run from £30 to £60. A full day is typically £250 to £500.

What should a sound engineer put on an invoice?

Beyond the legal basics, sound engineers should:

  • Separate the engineer fee from equipment hire; they are different services and clients compare them.
  • State the day length and the overtime rate per hour.
  • For production companies, quote their job number and the event name and dates.
  • Release final mixes only when the studio invoice is paid, and say so.

Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:

  • a unique, sequential invoice number
  • your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
  • the client’s name and address
  • the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
  • a clear description of each item of work or goods
  • the amount due and when it must be paid
  • your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered

Do sound engineers charge VAT?

You only charge VAT once registered, which is compulsory when taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12 months. Below that, show no VAT line and no VAT number. Once registered, these services are standard rated at 20%.

On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for sound engineers is usually “Entertainment or journalism” at 12.5% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions

How much do sound engineers charge per day?
Freelance live engineers charge £250 to £500 a day in 2026, with touring and broadcast work higher, plus PA hire if they supply it. Studio mixing is £100 to £300 per track or £300 to £600 a day. Overtime applies after 10 or 12 hours.
Should a sound engineer charge separately for equipment?
Yes. Your engineering fee is your time; PA hire is the equipment, with its own price and insurance. Separate lines let the client use their own PA and still book you, and make it clear what they are paying for.
Do sound engineers charge VAT?
Only once registered, above £90,000 turnover, which engineers with a PA hire business often reach. Fees and hire are standard rated at 20%. The flat rate sector for entertainment is 12.5%, though equipment purchases make the scheme a poor fit for hire businesses.
