How do yoga teachers usually invoice?

Yoga teachers invoice studios and gyms per class at the end of each week or month with the class dates listed, and sell class passes and private sessions to individuals paid in advance by card. Corporate wellbeing sessions are invoiced to the employer per class or per block on 30 day terms. Many teachers run their own classes in hired halls, in which case the hall rent is their cost and attendees pay per class or pass.

Yoga teachers in this example are paid on receipt. Hourly rates run from £30 to £70.

What should a yoga teacher put on an invoice?

Beyond the legal basics, yoga teachers should:

  • List each class with the date, time and venue on studio invoices.
  • For passes, state the number of classes, the validity period and the price per class.
  • Invoice corporate sessions per class with the date and headcount cap.
  • Charge private sessions at booking and show travel if you go to the client.

Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:

  • a unique, sequential invoice number
  • your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
  • the client’s name and address
  • the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
  • a clear description of each item of work or goods
  • the amount due and when it must be paid
  • your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered

Do yoga teachers charge VAT?

You only charge VAT once registered, which is compulsory when taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12 months. Below that, show no VAT line and no VAT number. Once registered, these services are standard rated at 20% because they are not medical care supplied by a registered health professional.

On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for yoga teachers is usually “Sport or recreation” at 8.5% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions

How much do yoga teachers get paid per class?
Studios pay £30 to £60 per class in 2026, sometimes with a per-head bonus above a threshold. Private sessions are £50 to £90. Corporate classes are £100 to £200 each. Teachers running their own classes charge £10 to £18 per person.
Should a yoga teacher invoice a studio weekly or monthly?
Follow the studio's payment run, which is usually monthly. Send the invoice on the last day of the month listing every class taught with its date. Studios that pay per head need the attendance figures on the invoice.
Do yoga teachers charge VAT?
Only once registered, above £90,000 turnover, which almost no individual teacher reaches. Yoga is not exempt as education or health care, so once registered it is standard rated at 20%. The flat rate sector for sport or recreation is 8.5%.
