How do mobile hairdressers usually invoice?
Mobile hairdressers are paid in the client's home at the end of each visit by card or cash and give a receipt from a card reader or booking app, with formal invoices for care homes, which are invoiced monthly listing each resident and service on 14 or 30 day terms. Travel is included within a local radius and added as a small line beyond it. Regular clients are booked on a cycle of four to eight weeks.
Mobile hairdressers in this example are paid on receipt. Hourly rates run from £25 to £50.
What should a mobile hairdresser put on an invoice?
Beyond the legal basics, mobile hairdressers should:
- List each service and the client's address or the care home name on the invoice.
- For care homes, list residents by name or room with the service for each.
- Show travel as a separate line only when charged beyond your radius.
- Take payment at the end of the visit and issue a receipt; monthly invoices only for care homes and businesses.
Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:
- a unique, sequential invoice number
- your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
- the client’s name and address
- the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
- a clear description of each item of work or goods
- the amount due and when it must be paid
- your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered
Do mobile hairdressers charge VAT?
Mobile hairdressing is standard rated at 20% once you are VAT registered, which is compulsory above £90,000 turnover; nearly all mobile hairdressers are below it and charge no VAT. Travel charges you add are part of the price and follow the same VAT treatment.
On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for mobile hairdressers is usually “Hairdressing or other beauty treatment services” at 13% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions
- How much do mobile hairdressers charge?
- A cut and finish is £30 to £50 in 2026, a root colour £60 to £90 and a full colour £90 to £140, typically 20% to 30% below salon prices because there is no premises cost. Care home work is priced per resident at £15 to £30 for a cut and set.
- Do mobile hairdressers charge VAT?
- Almost never, because turnover sits well below the £90,000 threshold. If you did register, services and travel charges would be standard rated at 20%. Do not print a VAT rate on your receipts unless you are registered.
- How should a mobile hairdresser invoice a care home?
- Monthly, with a line per visit date and the number of residents and services on that date, or a line per resident if the home recharges families. Quote the home manager's name and the purchase order if they issue one. Terms are 14 to 30 days.
