How do pressure washing contractors usually invoice?

Pressure washing contractors quote per square metre for driveways and patios, with re-sanding and sealing listed as optional extras that often double the ticket, and invoice on completion with payment within 7 days. Render and roof soft washing is priced per elevation or per job because access, not area, drives the time. Commercial car parks and forecourts are invoiced per visit on 30 day terms.

Pressure washing contractors in this example give the customer 7 days to pay. Hourly rates run from £30 to £50. A full day is typically £220 to £380.

What should a pressure washer put on an invoice?

Beyond the legal basics, pressure washing contractors should:

  • State the area in square metres and the rate, and whether re-sanding and sealing were included.
  • Note the sealer product used and its expected life; customers ask when it needs redoing.
  • Separate soft washing of render or roofs from pressure washing of hard surfaces.
  • Mention that moss and weed regrowth is not covered unless a treatment was applied.

Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:

  • a unique, sequential invoice number
  • your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
  • the client’s name and address
  • the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
  • a clear description of each item of work or goods
  • the amount due and when it must be paid
  • your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered

Do pressure washing contractors charge VAT?

You only charge VAT once registered, which is compulsory when taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12 months. Below that, show no VAT line and no VAT number. Once registered, this work is standard rated at 20%.

On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for pressure washing contractors is usually “Any other activity not listed elsewhere” at 12% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions

How much does pressure washing cost per square metre?
Driveway and patio cleaning runs at £2.50 to £5 per square metre in 2026, with a minimum charge of around £120. Re-sanding adds £1.50 to £3 and sealing £3 to £6 per square metre. Render soft washing is priced per elevation, often £150 to £400.
Do pressure washing contractors charge VAT?
Only once registered, above £90,000 turnover. A sole trader with one van is usually below that and charges no VAT. Registered firms add 20%, which is a real cost to householders but reclaimable for commercial clients.
Should I take a deposit for driveway sealing?
A small deposit of around 20% is reasonable when you must buy sealer in advance for a large area, since it cannot be returned once opened. For cleaning alone, no deposit is needed and payment on completion is normal. State the deposit on its own invoice if you take one.
