How do aerial installers usually invoice?

Aerial installers quote fixed prices for the common jobs, aerial, dish, extra point, and invoice on the day with payment before they leave. Parts are a meaningful share of the cost, so amplifiers, cable and brackets are listed by item. Letting agents and landlords send repeat work for communal systems and are invoiced monthly on 30 day terms.

Aerial installers in this example are paid on receipt. Hourly rates run from £40 to £70.

What should a aerial installer put on an invoice?

Beyond the legal basics, aerial installers should:

  • Price per job (aerial, dish, extra point) rather than by the hour, and list parts separately.
  • State the mounting position (loft, chimney, wall) because it affects both price and warranty.
  • Give a guarantee period on the installation and note that it excludes storm damage.
  • For communal systems, reference the block, the managing agent and the flats affected.

Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:

  • a unique, sequential invoice number
  • your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
  • the client’s name and address
  • the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
  • a clear description of each item of work or goods
  • the amount due and when it must be paid
  • your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered

Do aerial installers charge VAT?

You only charge VAT once registered, which is compulsory when taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12 months. Below that, show no VAT line and no VAT number. Once registered, this work is standard rated at 20%.

On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for aerial installers is usually “Any other activity not listed elsewhere” at 12% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions

How much does aerial installation cost?
A standard digital aerial supplied and fitted is £130 to £220 in 2026, a satellite dish £120 to £200 and an extra TV point £60 to £100. Chimney mounts with long cable runs cost more. Most installers charge a call-out of £50 to £80 for fault finding when no parts are needed.
Do aerial installers charge VAT?
Only once registered, above £90,000 turnover. A sole trader installer is usually below that and charges no VAT. Registered installers charge 20% on parts and labour. Aerial work in an existing home is never zero rated.
Should I charge a call-out fee for a signal fault?
Yes, £50 to £80 is typical, and it should cover diagnosis and simple fixes like reconnecting a cable. State up front whether it is waived if the customer goes ahead with a new aerial. Put it as its own line on the invoice.
