How do EV charger installers usually invoice?
EV charger installers quote a standard installation price that includes the charger and a set cable length, with extras such as longer runs, earth rods and consumer unit upgrades priced per item after a photo survey. A 30% deposit is taken when the charger is ordered and the balance is invoiced on commissioning. Where a grant applies, for example for flats or landlords, the installer claims it and shows the deduction on the invoice.
EV charger installers in this example give the customer 7 days to pay, after a 30% deposit taken before the work starts. Hourly rates run from £45 to £80. A full day is typically £320 to £480.
What should a EV charger installer put on an invoice?
Beyond the legal basics, EV charger installers should:
- State the charger make, model and power rating, and whether tethered or untethered.
- Define the standard installation (cable length, surface run) and list every extra beyond it.
- Show the grant as a deduction with the scheme reference where you claim it for the customer.
- Include the electrical certificate and DNO notification references.
Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:
- a unique, sequential invoice number
- your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
- the client’s name and address
- the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
- a clear description of each item of work or goods
- the amount due and when it must be paid
- your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered
Do EV charger installers charge VAT?
Home EV charge point installation is standard rated at 20% for a VAT-registered installer; it is not covered by the zero rate for energy-saving materials. Installation for a builder or developer is a construction operation under CIS, with 20% deducted from labour. Below the £90,000 threshold you charge no VAT. If you claim a government grant on the customer's behalf, show the gross price, the grant and the net balance.
On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for EV charger installers is usually “General building or construction services” at 9.5% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions
- Is EV charger installation zero rated for VAT?
- No. Unlike solar panels and heat pumps, a home charge point is not an energy-saving material for VAT, so a VAT-registered installer charges 20% on the charger and the labour. Below the £90,000 threshold no VAT applies.
- How much does an EV charger installation cost?
- A 7 kW smart charger installed is £800 to £1,200 in 2026 for a standard installation, with longer cable runs, earth rods and consumer unit work adding £100 to £500. Three phase and commercial units are priced individually. Most installers quote after a photo survey.
- Does CIS apply to EV charger installation?
- Electrical installation in buildings is a construction operation, so when a builder or developer pays you to fit chargers on a new estate they deduct 20% from labour. Householders paying directly do not. Keep the charger as a separate materials line.
