How do pest controllers usually invoice?

Pest controllers price treatments as a programme of visits, usually three for rodents and one for wasps or fleas, and invoice either per visit or for the whole programme up front. Commercial customers such as restaurants and warehouses are on quarterly or monthly contracts with a set number of inspections, invoiced in advance on 30 day terms. Proofing work and insect monitoring are listed separately.

Pest controllers in this example give the customer 7 days to pay. Hourly rates run from £45 to £75.

What should a pest controller put on an invoice?

Beyond the legal basics, pest controllers should:

  • State the pest, the treatment and which visit of the programme this invoice covers.
  • List proofing materials and labour separately from the treatment.
  • For commercial contracts, reference the contract number, site and period, and the number of visits included.
  • Record the product used and the COSHH or safety data reference; audits and food hygiene inspectors ask for it.

Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:

  • a unique, sequential invoice number
  • your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
  • the client’s name and address
  • the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
  • a clear description of each item of work or goods
  • the amount due and when it must be paid
  • your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered

Do pest controllers charge VAT?

You only charge VAT once registered, which is compulsory when taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12 months. Below that, show no VAT line and no VAT number. Once registered, this work is standard rated at 20%.

On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for pest controllers is usually “Any other activity not listed elsewhere” at 12% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions

How much do pest controllers charge?
A wasp nest is £60 to £100 in 2026, a three visit rodent programme £180 to £300 and a bed bug treatment £250 to £500 depending on rooms. Commercial contracts start around £40 to £80 per month for a small premises. Call-out fees are usually included in the treatment price.
Should I invoice the whole treatment programme up front?
Either way works, but invoicing the full programme on the first visit avoids chasing for the follow-ups once the problem has gone. If you invoice per visit, say on each invoice which visit number it is. Commercial contracts are invoiced in advance for the period.
Do pest controllers charge VAT?
Once registered above £90,000 turnover, yes at 20% on treatments, proofing and contracts. Many sole trader pest controllers stay below the threshold and charge none. Commercial customers can reclaim it, so registration costs you little in that market.
