How do handymen usually invoice?

Handymen charge by the hour or half day and invoice a list of the small jobs done on that visit, each with its time, so the customer can see where the hours went. Materials bought on the way are recharged at receipt price plus a small margin. Landlords and letting agents are the regular customers, paying monthly on 14 or 30 day terms for maintenance visits across several properties.

Handymen in this example give the customer 7 days to pay. Hourly rates run from £30 to £50. A full day is typically £220 to £340.

What should a handyman put on an invoice?

Beyond the legal basics, handymen should:

  • List each task and the time spent; customers accept hours more readily when they can see the jobs.
  • Charge a minimum of one or two hours and say so on the quote and invoice.
  • Recharge materials at cost shown on the receipt plus a stated handling margin.
  • For letting agents, put the property address and tenant name on each line.

Every UK invoice, whatever the trade, must also show:

  • a unique, sequential invoice number
  • your business name and address (and company number if you trade as a limited company)
  • the client’s name and address
  • the invoice date and, for VAT invoices, the date of supply if different
  • a clear description of each item of work or goods
  • the amount due and when it must be paid
  • your VAT number, the VAT rate per line and the VAT total, if you are VAT registered

Do handymen charge VAT?

You only charge VAT once registered, which is compulsory when taxable turnover passes £90,000 in any rolling 12 months. Below that, show no VAT line and no VAT number. Once registered, this work is standard rated at 20%.

On the Flat Rate Scheme the sector for handymen is usually “Labour-only building or construction services” at 14.5% of VAT-inclusive turnover, with a 1% discount in the first year of registration. If you spend little on goods you may be a limited cost trader and have to use 16.5% instead. The scheme suits businesses with few VAT-able costs; check it against the standard method with the VAT calculator before joining.

Frequently asked questions

How much should a handyman charge per hour?
In 2026, £30 to £50 an hour outside London and £45 to £65 inside it, with a one or two hour minimum and half day rates of £130 to £200. Materials are extra. Many handymen offer a fixed price for common jobs like hanging a door or fitting a shelf.
Do handymen charge VAT?
Only if registered, which a one-person handyman business rarely needs because turnover sits below £90,000. If you do register, labour and materials are standard rated at 20%. Do not show a VAT rate unless you have a VAT number.
Can a handyman charge for buying materials?
Yes. Either charge your hourly rate for the time spent collecting them or add a handling margin of 10% to 20% to the receipt price, but not both. Say which you do on the invoice. Keep receipts in case the customer asks.
